How Does Dental Insurance Work?

We'll help you fully understand your insurance coverage and patient responsibility before treatment.
Verification and Estimate

When you call us to arrange your first visit, we’ll collect your relevant insurance information. We will call your insurance company to get a breakdown of benefits and verify active coverage. Using this information, we’ll provide you with the most accurate estimate of coverage and expected out-of-pocket costs prior to receiving treatment.

Complete Your Treatment

When you come in for your appointment, we will provide a treatment plan which outlines your estimated co-pays. You’ll have the opportunity to ask any additional questions and feel confident knowing what to expect. We will collect your co-pay at the beginning of your visit and then complete your treatment.

Coverage and Payments

In most cases, your insurance will reimburse our office for covered services and provide an explanation of benefits (EOB) outlining your specific plan benefits. We will do our very best to give you a good faith estimate and ensure no financial surprises occur. Our team is available to answer any questions about your treatment costs and coverage.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers you can trust!
  • How much will my treatment cost with insurance?

The amount of coverage and out-of-pocket costs depend on the treatment and your insurance provider. We work hard to verify your insurance benefits to provide you a transparent estimate of your coverage. We strive to keep you informed, educated, and empowered to make decisions that best fit your budget and maximize your benefits. Our team will assist you and answer any questions you may have. They will also collect any insurance information prior to your appointment, so an accurate estimate can be provided at your visit.

  • Do you accept Medicaid and Medicare?

We accept North Carolina Medicaid. We accept some Medicare part C supplement plans provided through United Healthcare and Aetna.

  • What is a deductible?

A deductible is a specific amount determined and collected by your insurance plan that a patient is required to pay prior to receiving basic or major services (crown, filling, root canal, deep cleaning, etc.). Depending on your insurance plan, your deductible may also apply towards preventative services such as x-rays and exams. Check with your dental insurance provider if you are unsure of the amount and what it applies to. As always, our team is also available to assist you and answer any questions.

  • What is a waiting period?
Some insurance plans restrict coverage to basic or major dental services for a specific amount of time, called a waiting period. An insurance company will refuse to cover these more extensive services until the waiting period has ended.

We always recommend for our patients to ask about waiting periods when signing up with a new insurance plan, especially for those through the insurance marketplace (plans not obtained through an employer). Our greatest priority is for you to get the care that you need.

If you have questions about the waiting period, contact your insurance provider. As always, our friendly team is also here to assist you and answer any questions.

  • What is a PPO plan?

PPO (preferred provider organization) plans allow patients to choose any dentist they prefer, both in-network and out-of-network. In-network PPO dentists agree to a specific fee schedule decided by the insurance company, reducing the out-of-pocket costs for the patient.

  • What is an HMO/DHMO plan?
HMO (Health Maintenance Organization) or DHMO (Dental Health Maintenance Organization) plans require a patient to visit a specific dentist chosen by your employer and your insurance company. Unfortunately, due to these restrictions, we do not currently participate in HMO/DHMO plans.
  • Do you take walk-ins?
Yes. As part of our commitment to same-day care, we do accept walk-ins. However, we always recommend scheduling an appointment to avoid any waiting times. Our offices provide a range of opening times to fit your needs.

Scheduling ahead of time also allows us to verify your insurance coverage and get an accurate estimate of costs prior to treatment. Contact one of our offices to make an appointment today.
